Time to tri again

The last time I raced this triathlon, my middle schooler looked like this

Tomorrow is my second (and final!!) triathlon this season. I’m excited to do it, and to have it behind me. Like I said here, running is where my heart is. I’ve enjoyed the crosstraining, and will continue some of it, but look forward to more concentrated run training for the remainder of 2012.

The race is in Dewey Beach, Delaware, and it’s one I’ve done twice before. The last time was 11 years ago and my son was just a baby. Funny story that goes along with this: Mr. Zippy was doing triathlons back then, too. My brother, as well, and he decided to come out from Ohio to join us in the race. We had a friend avaiable to watch my son while we all raced, so everything was in place.

Race morning dawned and we all began our prep for the day. My son was eating rice cereal at the time and I had brought down a ziplock bag of it with us. My brother was unaware of that and was looking for the powdered drink mix he’d brought down (also in a ziplock bag–you can see where this is going). He filled up his water bottle for the race, we all got ready and headed off to the race course.

I’m sure by now you can imagine the surprise my brother had during the race when he took a drink from his water bottle. Rice cereal wasn’t quite what he had in mind! But it was a ball to have him out there on the race course and we all enjoyed the day.

I looked up my old results from 11 years ago. I forgot that the swim had been cancelled that year due to heavy surf, so there’s no real comparing. I don’t really have any big goals for this one other than to beat my bike split average from Iron Girl, which shouldn’t be too tough since that course was hilly and this is flat. Not to mention that my bike split was just pathetic and I know I can do better.

This year I’m doing the race with three friends, one of whom is doing her first. I can’t wait for her to experience her first tri, an experience I know she will love.

Come Sunday, it’s marathon training game on. Can’t wait. Who else is racing this weekend?

All the best with your tri! My wife wants me to do one Iron Man some day but I have ultra goals that I want to achieve first. I’ll have to see if my body has anything left after that. I’m not racing this weekend after last weekend’s mountain challenge. Have a great weekend!

I am racing a 5k tomorrow if you call it racing, not sure what my legs have in mind.

That is a great story about your brother. I would love to read all the mishaps of triathlons because there is so much more that can go wrong than in running.

Good luck! I bet you will kill your bike split!

And yay for focused marathon training! I am going to finish out my season training for the RW Half, take time off and then finally get to do marathon training again. I will be so excited to finally do a long run after such a long time off.

I’m racing the Amica Boston tri on Sunday. I’m also looking forward to having my season complete! I’m ready for a little break and to switch gears for a while before next season.

That rice cereal story is pretty good. Poor brother! Yuck! I’m racing a little 5K this weekend, not an A race as I’m gearing up for the Equinox 13.1 on Sept 23 (1-yr anniversary race/present to eachother), but I’m planning on racing it hard anyways. Good luck and have fun out there this weekend!

That is a hilarious story. Maybe rice cereal could be a new fuel for racing. I heard of someone that eats rice during long runs, kind of the same thing, right?

Best of luck at the tri. I’ll be doing a half marathon in Santa Fe this weekend. I’m feeling nervous since I don’t know where my speed has been lately. Oh well, I’m just going to try my best and enjoy it.
