Need I say a thing?
We’ve all heard the theory of six degrees of separation–that by connecting the dots of people you know, you can somehow find your way to just about everyone in the world through six people.
Since I am, ahem, just a bit intrigued by Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, I thought I’d see if I can’t find the six degrees between the two of us. Here goes:
1. I live near Baltimore
2. Back when training heavily for triathlon, I used to do masters’ swim practices at Meadowbrook in Baltimore
3. Michael Phelps trains at Meadowbrook
4. I’d see Michael Phelps there almost every time I swam
5. Michael Phelps is currently at the Olympics, where he has competed against, and been on two relay teams with…
6. You guessed it
See? I think we are destined to know each other. What’s that? He’s 20 years my junior? Details…
Who’s your Olympic favorite this year?

As for choosing between Phelps and Lochte I pick Lochte because somehow I find him more sympatic than Phelps.
My favorites are of course Dutch Atheletes: Ranomi Kromowidjojo, swimming, she’s going for gold tonight. Epke Zonderland: gymnastics, he has a chance to win gold too next week. Marianne Vos, cyclist, brilliant gold medal last Sunday, Anky van Grunsven, individual and team dressage and our male and female hockey team.
But I’m also going to watch the Athletics, especially Usian Bolt.

I’m a wee bit jealous! I love both Phelps and Lochte and for the life of me, I can only figure out my six degree …well, via you!

OMG- you used to see Michael Phelps daily?! So freaking cool! I will admit that I think Ryan Lochte is waaaaaay hotter than Phelps in the looks department.

Photographs like that 1st thing in the morning do nothing to help me get off this laptop and get my 3 kids and myself dressed and off to the gym! I have to suffer a million ladies beach volleyball comments on FB every day, thank you for redressing the balance
too funny! I am loving the US gymnastics team, kerrie walsh and misty may, kara goucher, and shalane, and Lolo!
I have to go with some of the local favorites from my area. And of course runners too! Both Matt Tegencamp and Evan Jager ran at the University of Wisconsin and are coached my a classmate of my Brothers (Jerry Schumacher). And Gwen Jorgensen in the Triathlon grew up and still lives in the Milwaukee area. What a great story she is only competing 2 years so far in the Tri.
Sure helps that she was an All American in Cross Country and a swimmer on the UW team too.

South Africa has a very small team at the Olympics but we now have 3 gold medals. Two for swimming and one for rowing. These guys are all heroes for our country and me

And I am totally crushin’ on decathlete Ashton Eaton. MMM…now to hunt down my 6 degrees…

There is some serious eye candy in this year’s Olympics. Lochte is beautiful, and seems like he’s got a good sense of humor. The men’s water polo team…mmmm. I’m not rooting for anyone in particular, but it’s been so inspiring to watch these amazing athletes.

I love Ryan. He actually went to my elementary school before he moved to FLA and my mom taught him in gym class. Apparently he misbehaved a lot! I think my mom never thought that he would become an Olympian based on having him in gym class!

So funny! I like Lochte too, but think there are probably more than 6 degrees of separation between us! I think it’s so cool you used to see Michael Phelps when you swam at Meadowbrook….did you get his autograph??!!
My fave swimmer is Aaron Piersol…I used to swoon over his backstroke!
This year I’d have to say it’s Oscar Pistorius, the “Blade Runner” – such a cute guy!

I’m a big fan of the Aussie hurdler, Sally Pearson. She’s from the same state, she went to little athletics (I took my kids to little athletics) and she has Golden Retrievers – one’s called Toby. Our dogs may be related.

Because of the move and then being without internet for a few days (still no tv) I feel like I’ve missed out a lot on the Olympics this time around. Clara Hughes is amazing, and I feel very won over by Gabby Douglas’s energy and bubbly grin.

I love this post. I too am a wee bit jealous that you got to see Phelps at the pool often. Yes, I’m a little intrigued shall we say by the truckload of eye candy that is Ryan Lochte. Although my favorite swimmer of late is Nathan Adrian in part because he’s half Chinese and well, I would like my half Chinese son to swim half as well as he does.
