Friday Five

1. I did my first brick workout in about five years, a 17-mile bike ride followed immediately by about a 5 1/2-mile run. Let’s just say that I need more bricks in my life before my August triathlon. I think it took me about four miles before my legs finally felt like running!

The Tuesday night fun run--a 30-year tradition

2. This picture is from a local Tuesday night fun run and as you can see, it’s quite popular. It’s a one-mile loop course and has been a summer tradition for more than 30 years.  It’s a great way to give kids early exposure to running in a low-key, non-competitive environment.

3. This video is from barefoot guru Michael Sandler’s upcoming movie on the topic. Even if you don’t buy into bare foot running, the scenery in the movie combined with the fun they are having will make you want to kick your shoes off and get at it.

4. Between the track and field trials, swimming trials, and the start of the Tour de France, I’m watching more TV in a couple of weeks than I do all year combined. Anybody else?

5. My kids have a triathlon this weekend. My son’s sixth, my daughter’s first. Can’t wait to watch them!

What do you have going on this weekend?

I ran the numbers from my Mizuno shoe giveaway and picked number eight, which is Rene Whitley. Congrats Rene–send me an email at and we’ll get you in some new shoes! Thanks to Mizuno for the opportunity.

I can’t even begin to describe the amount of TV I have watched the last few weeks. I am also staying up WAAAY past my bedtime (usually in bed 930 – was up til after 11 last night in order to watch the 5000m races!).
Good luck to your kids this weekend!! Can’t wait to hear how it goes =)

I don’t think brick runs ever feel good right off the bat!
You guys have a fun weekend planned. I love your active family; good luck to your kids!
I have a couple of long workouts planned on both the bike and run. It’s also a three-day weekend for us- Happy Canada Day!

Yes I am watching SO MUCH TV! I cannot keep up! Since it is light out till later, I often get busy and lose track of time and then its 9pm and I start watching the 3 hours of DVR’d stuff from the day and I never get through it before I am so tired and falling asleep. I am way behind!

Oh! I love bricks. So fun if you love that “jello” feeling in your legs when you run :) Totally effective though. And I want to hear about your kids tri’s. My 7 year old is begging me to do one at the end of July…but I’m doing my first that morning and have no idea how I’m supposed to keep up with him right after I finish mine!

I’m in awe (jealous!!) of all the trees in your neck of the woods (fun run!). I guess with all the trees comes humidity, which I’m not used to and thus makes me melt when I step in it. But so miss it sometimes.

Great job on your brick, I’m not sure I could run 2 miles after a bike ride like that. Guess I’ll find out in August. Ha.

Good luck to your kiddos this weekend – that’s so cool they’re both doing the triathlon!!

Love watching the Tour de France as well. This spring we were watching another bike race on tv and Bob Roll and Paul were commenting and my boys (ages 5, 8) both came out of their rooms and asked if we were watching the tour!

Congrats on the brick. You’ll get there in no time I’m sure. My daughter and I running Canada Day 5K on Sunday morning (her 2nd 5K) and then I take her up and drop her off at sleepover camp for a week (shudder).

I’ve never even heard of a kids tri! What a cool idea. I did my first brick (ever) a week ago, it wasn’t quite as long as yours (14 bike, 3.5 run) but I was feeling the same way on the run. I’m glad I’m getting a few practices in before the actual race… it’s harder than it sounds!

Way to go on the brick work out. I need to get some of those in myself. I love your Tuesday night fun run. What a great community event. I wish we had something like that where I live.

Yes, I am watching a ton of TV and can’t wait for the Olympics! I love all the inspirational stories with the athletes.

I have never done a brick workout in my life — but they sound tough! Nice work!

Hmm, what’s on my weekend agenda? Yoga date tonight, and hopefully waking up at the crack of dawn to go trail running with a local group. It will require me to wake up before 6am which is a lot to ask of this girl. I am hoping I find the motivation because they’re going to this really cool trail/mountain that I’ve never been to! And I have a new Sunday ritual of yoga and coffee with a friend. I LOVE summer. Ahhh. Have a fabulous wekend!

You are going to be so ready for your tri.
My legs need at least 2, sometimes 3 miles before they feel like running and that’s without bike rides.
No TV in this house. Sometimes I miss it, like when the Olympic Games start. Oh, wait, I will be on JMT then. Never mind. :)

Great job on your brick workout. I end up doing a brick workout about once a week…they’re tough!

Sounds like you’ve got a busy weekend plan. Have fun & good luck to your kids in their triathlon.

I don’t have too much going on. I have a 2 hr ride tomorrow and a 3 hr bike ride on Sunday.

That video looks rather thrilling, I WANNA TRY IT.

Wishing your kids good luck with their triathlon, it’s not always about winning, it’s about the spirit of the sport and staying in shape, but it’s nice once in a while to get on that first place :)

I have been glued to the tv. I love the Tour but throw in the trial and then the Olympics well, I may never leave the couch. heehee
I love that so many people come out to run. Awesome!
