They didn’t actually say any of this or question your priorities though? You don’t have to be a runner to understand having a passion for something.

This is so well said. I feel the same way a lot of the time when it comes to some of my non-running friends. They really don’t get it! I feel SO lucky to have such a strong passion for something. It’s not a “sacrifice” to me at all; I’m usually way more excited for a nice long run than other social activities that are “supposed” to be fun.

I would pass up on the night out as well, but it might also depend on how far out an event I was training for might be. As Greg McMillan said, you have to get selfish sometimes with your running because it’s all about you.
The only time I get grief from others is when I burn myself out, get grumpy and miserable due to training.

Thankfully I don’t get much grief at all. Although a friend just said to me the other day “Why would you want to race over Mothers Day weekend? Wouldn’t you rather sleep in?” um no.

I don’t have much of a night life, so no one looks at me crooked. But, I do get weird looks when I talk about some of my food experiments (like the strawberry chia jam that I made today).

Oh yes, I get it too. People who don’t love running don’t get it. I went to a women’s retreat last weekend, and during the free time a friend and I went for a 4+ mile run on the beach while others were reading, sitting in the hot tub, taking a nap, or walking on the beach. We got quite a questions about our sanity from others, but no matter–we had a blast running and then walked another couple of miles. Afterward I went for a horseback ride for an hour. Before I started running and getting in shape, I would have been the one questioning the sanity of anyone doing that!

I SO can’t stay up late anymore. It’s pathetic! It’s also led to healthier living, though ’cause if I’m up late, I’m a drinkin’ :p
