1. It’s so funny how one run can give or take confidence. Last Saturday’s 14 left me worried I’d struggle all the way to Boston. This Tuesday’s eight with my friends was my best since returning and left me feeling like I could PR Boston. The truth, I am sure, is in between.
2. I decided I want to gain a little leg turnover back and so am doing one session per week of tempo on the AlterG for three or four weeks. Yesterday I did three miles of tempo on it and feel good today. Mentally, I feel like it’s cheating!
3. Check out this article over on BlissTree about minimalism, which includes some input from me!
4. As I enter legit marathon miles this weekend, I’m also putting my monk robes back on. Time to really buckle down with early bedtimes, fewer glasses of wine, and really dedicated eating. Tradeoffs? Yes. Worth it? YES!
5. Go Ravens!

that is so cool. I have heard of water running but I have never seen anything like that alter G – cool. I like this post b/c as a runner I guess we can all relate to your first statement – every run IS different and, like you said can make or break your confidence. It’s kind of like life and that’s why I love it so much
I hope you kill boston!

I’m excited to hear if the AlterG helps with turnover. That’s a cool idea!

It’s not cheating, it’s smart!! It’s so true that one run can elate you and one can destroy your confidence. I sometimes feel that it I don’t have a strong finish on a run that it deflates me even if overall it was fast, and the opposite as well.
Go Ravens!

I am planning on hopping back on that bad girl right after my marathon next Sunday. I miss her!

Ah man it’s the fewer glasses of wine that gets me, does it really work all that self control? I’m trying to it this go around.
Can you believe after all that time off your first returning marathon is Boston!? That’s a pretty good come back of you ask me. And I’m still trying to grasp your swim comming up… That’s insane!! You rock!

I used to run on the Alter-G back in Chicago when I worked at a physical therapy clinic. I kind of felt like I was cheating too, but you’re not. Your training sounds like it’s coming along grreat! I’m so glad you had a great run that made you feel like you could PR. Wouldn’t that be something?

They AlterG looks pretty cool. Even if I don’t need it I still wanna run in it
I’m happy you’re getting in some good miles and even to utter a PR at Boston means you’re feeling up to speed! That’s good news!

i know what you mean about having to make those tradeoffs – I am realizing that now too especially as far as sleep and diet are concerned. as my mileage is increasing – hitting 50 this week – my appetite is too and i am reaching for sugary fatty things later at night. and then paying for it with bathroom stops during my run the next morning. not cool! i have to buckle down and make better choices – yes i need the calories but they need to come from healthier foods!
you are going to rock your 16 this weekend!
so cool that you can use the alter g! i really want to try it some day!

alter g aint’ cheating, it is safety in a way from injury. after i broke my foot the doc mentioned a place about 30 minutes away that has one if i wanted to run on it. i never did, as i was concerned about price, maybe i should use it for when i can start running to help me get back……might get check pricing now.

Every time I see an Alter G I get envious. I will have to find somewhere around her that has one. I imagine knee stress/pain is greatly reduced. Ugh, and tradeoffs? tradeoffs? Well, it is a little nuts what we will do to see a 5% increase in performance, no? But when you do it, its all worth it.

Good luck with life in the convent. Been there myself since New Years Day – actually down 9lbs since the New Years Day half marathon. Most of that was just bloat though.

I enjoyed the article as it does not push it either way, but rather gives advise and offers a warm friendly way to go about it. Thanks for sharing that link. A year ago, I was totally against it, but now I understand a little better what it’s about. Though I may never be a part of it, I respect it all the same. To each their own you know. What I don’t like is when people just try it because of it being a fad movement. Have a blast with your monk robes. Take pictures please! Take care and thanks for sharing the wealth of information on running and personal experiences!

I haven’t ever heard of the Alter G Treadmill. Just looked it up…pretty cool. After suffering from ITBS last year myself, I can see how this would feel nice. I’ve been warming back up to running and the pressure on my IT band has scared me. Anything us runners can do to not get back into injury is critical…I hate having to rest it out.
Good luck with your run this weekend!

I’m so glad your confidence is returning. When you’re running well you feel invincible but it only takes one awful run to put a pretty large chink in the armour and lots of good runs to make you feel confident again.

Awesome to get a nice boost of confidence. I agree the A-G is playing it safe when piling on the miles. I’ve pretty much given up alcohol the last year because of trying to cut the calories and not feeling very good when I try to work out the next morning. The bad news is that I now have very little tolerance and one drink with dinner can make me half loopy! Cheap date though.

I understand the confidence making or breaking runs. I had a few days off unintentionally then when I ran again my legs felt like marshmallow… I felt like I’d lost all my fitness. I’m hoping for a good run today!
