Big green diversion

 Big green diversion

While the list of things I can’t do gets longer as I wait for my feet to heal, it occurred to me that I didn’t want to spend the summer indoors on equipment I don’t enjoy. I’ll do some of it, sure, out of necessity (can you say LOTS of strength training?) but I needed something new. So the other day I was racking my brain for things I could do that were outside and I came up with this idea.

Meet my new green toy. We have several places very close by where I can launch this baby. I got the smallest, most lightweight version I could find so that I could handle getting it into/out of the care by myself. Will it compare to running or cycling fitness? No, but it will give me sanity, and right now that’s pretty important.

Ready to launch in my driveway

The funny thing is that I don’t really like kayaking. I’ve always wanted to like kayaking, but have found that I am a terrible paddler. So, here’s my chance to make kayaking mine. I think I can do it.

Do you kayak? What do you like about it?

I used to race kayak-like canoes (think crew boats for singles or doubles) up and down the East coast. We had a blast. I was in a duo most times and we did fairly well. It was a great experience! I miss the long training paddles and getting to see places from a completely different view!

    Enjoy!

I am sure you will enjoy the kayak!
I had an english canoe, a real "arrow", light and fast, good for every season and to "cut" the waves. I spent good time with it.
When I got the new job I didn't have anymore the time to play with that toy so I gave it to a friend.
    I miss that "boat".
Congrats, you made the right thing.

  20. ShutUpandRun says:

You look good in the kayak. Goes with your eyes.

Too bad it is not a blow up boat. You could bring it to CO with you.

    I've actually NEVER kayaked!

  21. Teamarcia says:

Girl that looks super fun! But what do I know since I've never even tried it? I still think it's an awesome change of pace though.

  22. Can I just say I'm green with envy right now?? I miss the water and there just isn't much around me here. Enjoy your new green toy!

  31. trifitmom says:

we have 2 kayaks and we live close to the water but we have not used them a lot, we need to get into it more

  32. Awesome pics! lol at launching in the driveway! That is great that you got the kayak to add another activity to your workout. I've only been kayaking a couple times, but it is a great workout, if you basically try to max out you will be really tired by the end! Mainly your shoulders and upper body, but I thought it was a pretty good cardio workout.

  33. I love kayaking! I think good form really helps make it more pleasant, but just floating around in the water is so relaxing!

  34. I tried kayaking last summer for the first time. I am also pretty bad at paddling but I LOVE being on the water. I'm hoping to do a LOT of kayaking this summer.

  35. I used to kayak way back when. I love it, because of the sense of freedom you get. Plus your upper body will look amazing at the end of the summer. I wish kayaks were cheaper, because I would totally get one and go out to do it again.

  36. Haley @ Climb Run Lift Mom says:

You're going to love it! I'm jealous, I've been wanting one for a while now. I love kayaking, it's so relaxing and it can be an amazing workout :) Enjoy it!!!

  37. Too, too fun! That'll keep your sanity!

  38. Oh, the envy! I have been wanting to buy a kayak for such a long time! Hopefully in the next year. We have lots of no-wake lakes here, so there's lots of places to launch! :)

Have LOTS of fun with that bad boy!

  39. Great fun. Your arms are going to be even more awesome!

Hope to see you all decked out in your pfd and paddles, too.

  40. racing dawn says:

That's so cool!!! I'm so jealous. I've always wanted to try! How fun.

Is this like the kayaking where you go down white water rapids and flip over and pop back up?!?!? So intense! Can't wait to hear more about your expeditions!

  41. funderson says:

hmm..definately don't kayak. The crazy people around here fling themselves down raging snow-melt rivers/creeks in the Spring and it is terrifying to me. Now, a nice sea kayak that I'm not attached to on nice quiet water sounds lovely.

  42. Michelle says:

Envy, envy! I love to kayak – except I usually rent the two person one so I can cart BW around – I bungee a kiddie lawn chair to it for him.

  43. Fun! I haven't been kayaking in a while but it is so much fun!

  44. I've been kayaking a couple of times. Super fun! Of course, I managed to flip the thing one of those times :P

  45. Leah @ Chasing Atalanta says:

I've kayaked once in my life. Never again. Not my bag.

  46. Amanda - RunToTheFinish says:

oh man!!! we wanted to buy kayaks, but couldn't figure out where on Earth we would put them in teh condo…yup we live near the ocean, have no storage..bummer. but we keep renting them which is actually really cheap around here

  47. OMG that looks like a ton of fun, even if it is just you standing there with the kayak or on the driveway.

I have canoed a number of times but not a kayak, but I think I would love it.

Get pics of you on the water…..

  48. Adrienne says:

Love kayaking. My boyfriend is a mechanical engineer and put a motor (!) in one, fun for a lazy day out on the water, but paddling is so much more…natural!!

    Have fun!

  49. I love getting out to the middle of the lake and just letting the water me around. It's not much of a workout but it's relaxing. Have fun going green!

  50. I really like canoeing and have always wanted to try crew/rowing, but kayaking always has freaked me out because of the "rolling and going under while still attached to the boat" possibility.

  51. Richelle says:

I've never been kayaking before, but it might be something my future hubs and I could do on our honeymoon. Kayaking sounds like a great cross-training activity. Enjoy! I hope your feet heal soon!

  52. I've only been kayaking a couple of times but I loved it! I wish I could do more of it! I hope you have a blast with it!

  53. Can't wait to hear about your kayaking adventures! I've only done something similar once and I got stuck in the corner of the lake 'cause I couldn't figure out how to steer it… I was only 12/13 so that's my excuse anyway!!

  54. I am not a kayaker but so many people love it! I hope you do as I get the wanting something to do you love thing.

  55. Good idea!

  56. The Green Girl says:

    Go, Miss Zippy!

They have kayaking rentals here in Long Beach – it's pretty inexpensive and fun activity.

  57. HappyTrails says:

Never have kayaked but certainly would be a nice change of pace from running and riding. I am loving the pretty green color you chose!

  58. We have a kayak, but it's an ocean kayak. What are we doing with an ocean kayak when we live in Illinois? Good question. It gets predictably little use. I have several friends with your style kayak, though, and they've gotten into some endurance races like a 60 mile kayak race or a 340 mile one (can you say crazy?). I think they've really enjoyed the training, too. Good luck falling in love with your kayak!

  59. Monica @ a bold pace says:

Ok, now that sounds like a fun diversion!
    ps. Love your Remanents tee!!

  60. I've said to my husband for years that I'd love a kayak. We have a few places near us that I could use it, but I've never taken the plunge!
