Merrell Pace Glove review

The Merrell Pace Glove

You know how I feel about barefoot running–to me, it’s the best method for getting down the right form. But not everyone is interested in being completely barefoot, and I get that. For those who want to improve form in a minimal shoe, there is an ever growing number of options available, some good, some not-so-good.

The Vibram sole

Online Shoes recently gave me the opportunity to try what I think is one of the better minimalist options, the Merrell Pace Glove. I think glove is the perfect moniker for this shoe–it really wraps your feet like a glove. It has zero heel to to drop, extreme flexibility, and a Vibram trail sole. It also has an Aegis microbe shield to help keep the nasties away. I’d guess you can wear this shoe with a sock, but to me it’s preferable without, so the microbe shield is a bonus.

So lightweight you might want to try juggling them

The feel of these shoes when running or walking is about as close to the ground as you’re going to get with a shoe. They’re super lightweight and hug your feet. Your toes have room to splay and heel striking is, I would guess, just about impossible in these. I’d also say you can wear these shoes on both trails or the road and be happy either way with them. My one complaint about the shoe is that it cuts in near the arch–the better to hug your foot–and almost feels like there is an arch in the shoe. I’ve come to prefer shoes without arches, so this kind of bugs me when I have them on. Again, this is just my perception–there is no arch.

Just added the pink pair to my daughter’s collection

Merrell has taken the time with its barefoot line to provide education about minimalist running, both online, and with each pair of shoes. I think that’s a solid, responsible approach. Another thing they’re doing that I love is providing a kids’ line–one of the only companies out there doing this.

Like what you see and hear here? Then stay tuned, ’cause next week I’ll be hosting a giveaway for a nice OnlineShoes credit. Be sure to check in then!

I keep seeing runner in minimalist shoes during my ultras and I wonder how long it took them to get the feet and ankles in condtion to handle that. I know one of my problems when I started serious trail running was weak ankles. I'd love to make a more committed effort going barefoot-ish outside. Thanks for the great info!

Those look great! I love the idea of barefoot running but don't actually want to go barefoot. Maybe this is the way to get into it.

I dig the trail version of those shoes. In a few months I'll need to buy new running shoes and even though I don't foresee myself purchasing vibrams, I like the idea of minimalist trail shoes instead. ps. im so sorry to hear about your mother. sounds like you have such a strong, positive outlook and that really inspires me. i'll be thinking of you and your fam.

I bought those in the Mary Jane style at REI…and I loved them….but I took them back. Not exactly sure why, I think I figured I wouldn't wear them much in the summer being off work.

Minimalist shoes continue to intrigue me. Honestly, though, the fear of injury from running BF on the city roads stops me from wanting to try. Also, I'm sure it would have an impact on speed and pace.
Regardless, I have a ton of respect of barefoot runners. They have the courage and strength that I can't find.

I added a barefoot portion to my training this year to help with form. I chose the Bikilas just because I enjoy the conversations started by them.

I think I'd like those. I went barefoot all growing up, but in my old age my soles are getting too soft for no shoes at all! These look like a good compromise.

Thanks for the review! I have never tried these types of shoes or barefoot running, but I enjoy reading about it! Maybe I will have to try it someday! :)

These look great but i don't think I can go barefoot for more than very short distances.
Interesting post, I like to know the new "frontiers" of running.

Sure, I guess I would enter this giveaway and give them a whirl. Why am I still so resistant to these types of shoes. Oh, I know, I am an old dinosaur.
