I’m sure you all remember your first days of blogging; I know I do. I’d put up what I thought was an interesting post and then wait. And wait. And wait for a comment. For the most part all I got in response to my posts was silence. Getting two or three comments was cause for celebration. It’s nice to now have a great group of followers to have virtual conversations with on all sorts of topics.
It’s because I remember those “early” days of blogging that I’m starting a regular post here, one that features some of the new running blogs I come across. There’s some great material out there, but until these blogs get a foothold, you might not know they exist. I can’t take all the credit for this idea, btw, because Skinny runner invented this wheel. I hope she knows I am stealing the idea because I think it’s such a great one!
Without further ado, here’s the first newbie blogger I want to introduce you to: Abbi at Higher Miles. She’s a newer runner who did her first 5k on Thanksgiving 2009. Up until then, she’d been running three to four miles at a time on the treadmill as a way to keep in shape. When her husband suggested they try a 5k, she was game. The rest is history.
Favorite race distance: They’re all pretty new to me, but I’d say the 1/2 marathon right now.
Running goals, short-term and long-term: Upcoming first marathon in October; that pretty much consumes me right now! Long-term, after I finish the marathon, I’m hoping I’ll have a good enough experience to want to try another one and then focus on improving my time. I think it would be pretty cool to finish some sort of ultra at some point too.
Favorite race to date and why? Chambersburg 1/2. It was my first 1/2, the conditions were miserable and in no way did I feel prepared for it. But I went out there, completed it and then fully realized how much of this is a mental game…which I loved!
What lured you to blogging? I’ve read blogs on all different subjects for years, but I’ve always been a lurker. I started finding lots of running blogs when searching for new music to add to my playlists. In starting to train for this marathon, I thought it would be a great way to connect with others who are experiencing or have experienced the same things. It lured me out of being a lurker and I’m loving it.
What’s behind the title of your blog, Higher Miles? This year has been all about running higher mileage–not overly creative!
Dream race? this is odd for me, but I think the Disney Goofy Challenge looks exciting. I’m not at all a Disney person, don’t have kids or any real reason I’d want to do a Disney race, but it just looks like it would be a blast.
Tell me one random thing that might surprise people about you? I like to knit. It takes a backseat in the summer but come fall/winter, I hope to pick it up again.
Be sure to head on over to Higher Miles and check out Abbi’s journey!
